ONONDAGA INVITATIONAL

Kirk Reynolds

Onondaga Yacht Club, Liverpool, NY, August 29

15 boats showed up on a day that started with light rain and low overcast and about 8-10 knots of breeze from the west. We were encouraged because the forecast called for clearing and continued wind.

Clay Murphy won the first two races convincingly. He finished third in the third race and it looked like he had the place wired. We could only manage a fifth, second and eighth place finish, including fun adventures like running hard aground in the mud along with a few other boats near the leeward mark.

We desperately needed a rest and luckily the RC called for lunch break! OYC put on a great lunch. We headed back out iunder partly cloudy skies, hoping for a little better luck in the last three races.

Federico Meira won the fourth race and we were second. We won the last two races and with the throwout we won overall. The racing turned out to be very challenging, with several boats capable of the overall win. The series came down to the last race to determine the winner. Many thanks to Craig Thayer, Regatta Chairman, RC and the OYC Commodore, Jan Beall, for a memorable event.
