A nice sailing day with winds better than predicted, but still up and down from 0 to less than 10 MPH, northerly to northwesterly, with temperatures in the low 70s.  The river current was surging, flowing at 30,000 CFM with a gage height of  5.5 feet at the Little Falls station, and an outgoing tide.  This made for some frustration during the lulls in the wind.  Todd Johnson and Jennifer Parrow and crews served as RC.

A weird sailing day with winds coming sometimes from the south, and sometimes from the north, and sometimes from both directions at the same time (picture Frank approaching the starting line on race 1 with spinnaker up and drawing while at the same time 13 other boats were on the line close-hauled)!  Winds were generally out of the west but shifted at will between southwest and northwest, and were up and down all day, ranging between 0 and about 10 MPH. It was enough to drive RC bananas as they set, and then re-set the windward-leeward course multiple times.  Frank's main halyard disconnected from the headboard 10 minutes before the start of the first race but the crew effected a miracle recovery, deciding not to send Skip climbing to the masthead. What they did instead was to tilt the boat until the masthead was at deck height on the Bayliner, and then they reconnected the halyard to the main from there.  This was the first race ever for new skipper Sam Zadeh, crewing with Dan Korwan and David Thompson.  High Tide 11:28 AM;  river height at Little Falls station 4.8 feet, discharge 20,000 CFM.

Patience was the watchword and the virtue of the day. RC postponed the start, keeping boats at the dock until 11:30, and then towing us to the race area on a flat calm Potomac with partly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 70s. Finally an easterly breeze came up, a triangular course was set, and the first race got off at 1 PM.  As winds shifted to a more southerly direction the course was re-set and re-set again. Three more races were started before 3 PM.  Winds were forecasted for 3 MPH, but by the end of the day they were up around 6 - 10 MPH.  High Tide 7:06 AM; Low Tide 1:47 PM; river height at Little Falls station 3.9 feet, discharge 9,800 CFM.
