Meet Team 14211
Telios Demetres (age 18) is a
familiar face around the Greek Lightning scene. He has placed in the top
3 over the past 3 Greek Lightning Championships and 6th in
the European Championships last year. He started sailing Lightnings at
age 12. Now at age 18 he continues to train exclusively in the
Lightning. Telios enjoys the people in the Lightning Class, he says that
they are very helpful.
Crew Members Alexis Papoutsoglou
(age 17) and Makis Asvestavrs (age 17) both started sailing at an early
age in the Optimist and 420. For Alexis, the 2007 European’s was his 1st
Lightning Regatta; he came from the 470 Class.
As a cultural sideline, it’s interesting to note that
Greek Youth Athletes who place within the top 6 in a European
Championship are excused from taking the rigorous entrance exam for
University. They can attend any school they wish. The Greeks after all
have a few millennium of practice at encouraging young athletes.
