The Nyack LAST BLAST! went off with gusto, October 12, 2002! We asked
our favorite race committee chairman, Thistle sailor Charlie Green, to
'run as many races as possible.' At the competitors' meeting he was asked,
"How many races are you going to try to get in?" And he said, "Well, I'm
going to try for 20, but I don't think I'll make it!" And that's how we
came to be so tired by dinner time. This five minute starting sequence
doesn't give you much time for resting up: it's already time for the next
one! In the end, we got in six windward-leeward races, some of them two
times around.
The breeze kept it up all day. We had 12 - 20 knots the whole time, from
about 30 degrees (more or less!) east of North. There was one capsize,
which gave us a chance to take a break and catch our breath while that was
sorted out (thanks, Bill!). We had eighteen boats, which was enough to
make the event very entertaining.
