Deep South Savannah
Southern Circuit Day 1
March 8, 2003
By Amy Smith Linton
Savannah is great. Really. It makes
people funnier, for one thing. After a day on the tricky waters of the Skidaway
and Wilmington Rivers, people start coming up with great sayings, like,
"Sometimes a puff will shoot you right to the back of the fleet." or
"You can go from the front, make a mistake, and end up at the back - except
you didn't make a mistake."
Anyway, Savannah is great. The race committee makes a
real effort to run fair races - even given that you can't see the windward mark
from the start. This is a regatta where experience and miles pay
out. Just look at the results: Dave Peck is a younger fellow, but Dick
Hallagan and Jim Carson are showing the fleet how to work the course.
It's a moderate, if chilly, weekend, winds are 3-10 at any
given moment, boats to windward and leeward can be surfing past while you wait,
in the calm. This regatta is a test of patience, a test of exotic bug
spray, a test of how well you can carry a spinnaker to weather. It's also
a test of how much good food you can eat, and how late you can stay up talking
to old friends and new ones. You're missing it - hope to see you next
year.

After waiting we tried for a race
around 12:30. After everybody went out to the start area and sailed around for a
while the wind died again so the race was called off.
