2005 Squam Lakes Lightning
Regatta
August 27-28

16 Lightnings, 10 from the home
fleet and 6 visitors, showed up for the Squam Lakes Regatta on
August 27-28. Sailors were greeted Saturday by bright sunshine and
a five to ten knot southeasterly breeze that shifted back and forth
all day through 30 degrees. Race committee chair Art Cunningham set
a course that included the longest possible unobstructed SE beat
given the shape of the lake. The big shifts tended to jumble the
standings but Bob Bush, George Peter, and Dan Egan played the shifts
beautifully to monopolize the top places. As usual, the scenery was
gorgeous, several crews took time out to swim between races, and
Squam Lake lived up to its picturesque reputation. As the sun set
over the mountains, a big crowd of Lightning people enjoyed drinks
and munchies at the Squam Lakes Association.
Sunday was a completely
different story. Gloomy low clouds, strengthening rain, and flat
calm dominated the day. The regatta organizers took a long look at
the weather radar at 10:30 in the morning and decided that there was
little or no chance of good racing under the conditions. The awards
were given at 11:00 AM, the bar was opened, and all the boats were
packed up before the skies opened up and dumped even harder. All
left agreeing that half a regatta is better than none.
