Regatta Report
2006 Duck Challenge, Havre de Grace, Md
8/19-20 2006 |
| For the second year running Nabeel Alsalam and his seasoned crew
finished first after the spray settled in the final race. The two
days at this 5th annual event were blessed with varied winds and the
steady hand of John/Julie Heffner on the RC boat along with friends
from the J-24 fleet. A day one start @11:40am and steady breeze in
the 8-10 range allowed the competitors ample time to get in 4 W/L
courses and off the water to nearby host Tidewater Marina. This
convenience allowed time to put the boat away, shower then enjoy
snacks, beer and a cook your own sirloin/salmon feast. This all was
followed by celebrations in Havre de Grace's quaint town
establishments. Sailors enjoyed the usual lies and hand karate
demonstrations which surely amused the public and an unusual survey
completed by a few nameless female competitors, most then headed to
bed to rest up for expected higher winds on Sunday. Day 2 started
earlier to allow enough racing and time for sailors to hit the road.
The winds were lighter than expected in the 4-8 mph range with some
dramatic oscillations in the final race which tested the patience of
all the competitors. The hand painted Duck decoys by local artist
Dave Walker were presented to the top 5 finishers and crew. |
