Winners Perspecive, by Allan Terhune: The sailing on Saturday was great, the breeze was perfect and it was an absolute, beautiful day.  This still lead to some tricky conditions and some hard sailing!  There were two things that were very important to us, #1 getting off the starting line as best we could, and #2 especially early in the day, setting up the boat with enough power to get through the little chop, but not so over powered in the breeze that it was heeling too much.  I work very hard to make the boat “easy” to sail, meaning that we set the sails up so that the boat is on its feet and manageable so that we can sail it as efficient as possible and allow us to sail the race without worrying about the boat all the time.

The other big key to Saturday was staying in the pressure. There were definitely lines of pressure that you had to stay in..while it was breezy, it was streaky and there were big changes in pressure if you did not stay in them.

Sunday was a great day. The biggest key was staying on the lifted tack. There were BIG shifts and staying on the lift was huge Sunday.

All in all, it was a great regatta, and I think all who participated got a real nice weekend of sailing.

Commentary by David Thompson, Lightning 15228: Congratulations to Allan Terhune, who ran away with the regatta, with 5 bullets and a 3rd!  The weatherman brought us two really good racing days on the Chester River -- on Saturday we had steady winds from the SSW at 10 to 15 kts, a bit stronger for the first race, then tapering off as the day went on, and we got in four races before calling it a day at 5 PM.  On Sunday the winds were lighter and from the SW, but still steady enough to allow enjoyable racing.  With bright sunshine and warm temperatures on both days we had opportunities to get a good suntan, or a burn for those not protected with sunscreen.

This year's Dixie District Championship Regatta was run in conjunction with the Rock Hall One Design Invitational Regatta that drew a total of 98 boats and 190 competitors, and was run on two courses -- an upper course for Albacores; Chesapeake-20s; Comets; Hamptons; Rebels; Wayfarers; Windmills; and an open Monohull class; and a lower course for Lightnings and Catamarans.  This worked well, and we were amazed at the speed of the A-cats as they flew past us reaching downwind, with musical notes emanating from their humming rigging.

We genuinely appreciated the venue -- a wide, but protected, open river with almost no powerboat traffic -- and the facilities of the Rock Hall Yacht Club that included more than enough level grass area boat parking, two cranes; two ramps; an inviting clubhouse, deck, and pavilion, and gracious hospitality from club members and officers.  A catered BBQ dinner on Saturday night provided lots of opportunity for socializing and for re-establishing Dixie District acquaintenances.  This was a great regatta!

Commentary by Chuck Parry, Fleet Captain, RHYC Fleet 513: Rock Hall Yacht Club has held the Summer Regatta for about 60 years. Over that time the event has morphed from mostly boozing and a bit of sailing to more and more good sailing with all the booze anyone wants today. This year set a new record of 98 boats for the One Design Regatta around buoys in the Chester River. This was preceded (as always) by 45 boats in  the Down River Race from Chestertown to RHYC. We (thank God) had no injuries or even damage that I know of.  Icing on the cake for our event was having the Dixie District Championships for the Lightning class as a big part of the One Design Event. At the end of the weekend, all of us, sailors and volunteers, were exhuasted, but it was the good kind for a weekend well spent.
