“I Want to Crew!”

Last updated 11/01/2010

To add your name to this list, send an email to Cathy Bleakly, Fleet 50 Webmaster (cbleakly@cox.net)  giving your name, contact information, and experience.

However, don't sit by the phone waiting for it to ring!  Generally each Lightning skipper has two favorite crew that sail regularly, and one or two favorite back-ups, so it is unusual for a skipper to come here to search for a replacement crew for a given race day.  But it does happen.

We recommend you also check the website regularly to see which skippers have been sailing, and which ones have not (because they were short crew?) , and then send email messages to one or two to promote your interest and availability.

Many skippers, when they know in advance that they will need crew for an upcoming race, will post a request on the Fleet 50 Yahoo Groups mail list.  You should join this group if you want to receive the postings.

Your best bet for picking up a crew position is to just show up at the dock on a race day (get there a few minutes prior to the 10 AM Skippers' meeting).  Almost always there is one skipper short one crew, and occasionally more than that.  And, if all boats are full, you almost always can secure an assignment  on the Race Committee, which gets you a free, all-day motorboat cruise on the Potomac and an opportunity to officiate, under supervision, in an exciting athletic competition while meeting other crew and skippers as you officiate.

Names will remain on this list for a minimum of one year.  Inactive crew candidates will be removed from the list after one year of inactivity.

Thanks for your interest!

I've raced sailboats for about 16 years. I have experience on one design boats including sunfish, lasers, bluejays, 420s, with specific emphasis in later years on lightnings. I've coached children and adults. I've also raced IODs, Shields, Farr and 40s. I grew up sailing on the Barnegat Bay at Barnegat Light Yacht Club in Harvey Cedars NJ (Long Beach Island). I've raced in Newport, Larchmont, Oyster Bay, all over NJ, Annapolis, Miami, Savannah GA, and St. Pete Yacht Club.  I'm 6'0" and 190 lbs.  We live in Arlington so only 15 minutes away!

I've been sailing and racing all kinds of boats since I was a nipper although got properly stuck into racing in a very scruffy and informal way in Scotland where I co-owned an Achilles 24.  No experience on Lightenings though and no local knowledge having just moved into the area.  I live 10 mins from Daingerfield and will scramble and fill a gap if available!  5'8" and 180 lbs. 10/25/2010
John Kircher john@clippercity.com 703-217-6669 I’ve done a lot of big-boat stuff, mostly on the Bay. My last two boats were a J/105 and a Tartan 3000. After I sold the 105 three years ago, I skippered a club’s J/22 and J/29 on the Patapsco. I have lots of racing experience but little Lightning-specific familiarity or local knowledge. 6’2”, 200 pounds.
