“I
Want to Crew!”
Last updated 06/09/2009
To
add your name to this list, send an email to
David Thompson,
Fleet 50 Webmaster (Dthomp01@aol.com)
giving your name, contact information, and experience.
However,
don't sit by the phone waiting for it to ring! Generally each
Lightning skipper has two favorite crew that sail regularly, and one or
two favorite back-ups, so it is unusual for a skipper to come here to
search for a replacement crew for a given race day. But it does
happen.
We
recommend you also check the website regularly to see which skippers have
been sailing, and which ones have not (because they were short crew?) ,
and then send email messages to one or two to promote your interest and
availability.
Many skippers, when they know in advance that they will
need crew for an upcoming race, will post a request on the Fleet 50
Yahoo Groups mail list. You should
join this
group if you want to receive the postings.
Your
best bet for picking up a crew position is to just show up at the dock on
a race day (get there a few minutes prior to the 10 AM Skippers'
meeting). Almost always there is one skipper short one crew, and
occasionally more than that. And, if all boats are full, you almost
always can secure an assignment on the Race Committee, which gets
you a free, all-day motorboat cruise on the Potomac and an opportunity to
officiate, under supervision, in an exciting athletic competition while
meeting other crew and skippers as you officiate.
Names
will remain on this list for a minimum of one year. Inactive crew
candidates will be removed from the list after one year of inactivity.
Thanks
for your interest!

I grew up sailing in Groton Long
Point, CT, where I raced Blue Jays, 420s and keelboats. Raced on the
Dartmouth College Sailing Team as a helmsman (graduated in '04). Also
taught sailing for several years to kids (in Optis, Blue Jays and
420s) and adults (420s, big boats). I'd love to
sail with people who like to practice a bit. Happy to crew in either
position. I weigh about 172 lbs, about 6 ft tall. |

have done occasional coastal/offshore yacht racing over the years
since. I am in need a bit of a refresher but hope to get back to a
competitive level this summer. |

I have been sailing ever since I was
5 years old (almost 20 now) and I have sailed everything from Optis,
Lasers, Cats, 420's, Flying Scots (was in nationals this past June)
and also a few keel boats such as a Catalina 25, Catalina 31 and a
few Hunters in that size range. I live in Norfolk, Va. when I am
not at school at George Mason. My summer job the past 3 summers
has been on the Norfolk Naval Base, teaching kids and adults how to sail. |
