This is a family event, with lots of sights to see in nearby Washington, DC.  Leesylvania State Park has hiking trails, playground equipment, picnic facilities, showers, indoor restrooms, and sandy beaches for sunning.   Tent camping near the pavilion is allowed.  Of course there are all the sights of DC just up I-95.  Check the website for more details, like pictures and results: http://www.lightningclass.org/fleet50

NOTICE OF REGATTA

These races will be governed by the “rules” as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing.  The races are open to Lightnings and Flying Scots.  The entry fee is $95 for Lightnings and $85 for Scots.  Six races are planned.  If all six are sailed, a sailor’s best 5 are scored.  Otherwise, all races are scored, and 1 race constitutes a regatta.

Sailors may also carry a handheld VHF radio aboard.  The race committee may announce their intentions to start a race on the radio and count down the last 5 seconds to various flag signals.  The race committee may also announce the sail numbers of OCS boats, although possibly after a significant delay.

Allan Terhune of North Sails and multiple time North American champion in the Lightning and Flying Scot classes will lead a multi-faceted racing clinic. On Saturday he will help sailors with questions tune their rigging. After the skipper’s meeting he will lead a discussion among the top sailors on how conditions of the day will affect their trimming techniques and strategy.  After racing, during Happy Hour, he will lead a debriefing of the same sailors on how those techniques and strategies worked.

Furthermore, any sailor who wants will be paired with a top sailor – a “mentor system”.  In the parking lot, their boats will be next to each other so they can chat about tuning, etc.  On the water, they will meet up between races to discuss how things went and what might be done to solve any problems.

NEED CREW?

Every year we have been successful in helping to line up crew for skippers who are short of crew.  We have a long list of people interested in crewing.  So if you’d like to come to the regatta but possibly are short of crew, call our Director of Crew Matching, Jeff Storck at  571 422-2444 or theoretically@verizon.net. Please call early so that we can lock these crew people in.
