and Steve Little (SEL2@Cornell.edu
hull 15188, fleet 484, Ithaca), for the benefit of the International
Lightning Class Association (ILCA).
As of May 9, 2007, Lightning-L has
326 members. This has been fairly constant since 1998.

The list does not allow advertising
or want ads, as the class has other venues for those functions. Its
primary function is to inform Lightning sailors of class activities,
regattas, crew needs, etc., and to answer technical “how do I do that?”
questions.
The list encourages open and honest
discussion, recognizing that differences of opinion will exist. As
subscribers, we must be sensitive to the wide range of subscriber needs,
ranging from seasoned Lightning sailors to brand new ones. We must also
be cognizant of people’s time, as this is the number one reason people
leave the list. Poor list etiquette will result in an occasional,
usually private note from the administrators.
List management issues to all
subscribers will be issued under the subject heading “Administrivia”.
The list’s attributes are:
Private- new subscribers must be
approved
Only members can post
Only administrators can see the list
addresses
The list is unmoderated
Archives are available (they were
not previously)
These settings and Cornell’s virus
and spam engines have kept our list relatively free from unwanted
activity for nearly 10 years. List addresses are only shared with the
ILCA office.
To the user, the list offers a
number of configurations, such as “Digest Format” mailings. These
settings are available through Cornell’s web based Lyris list interface.
Subscribing and unsubscribing can be done directly via email or the web
interface, or by contacting the administrators.
To access the archives send an email
to

Use the following syntax with the subject line blank (note the date
format):
GET LISTNAME-L date1-date2
(Example: GET Lightning-L
20060801-20060803)
Remember that the list only has
archives going back to about July, 2006. Also note that many people use
HTML formatted mail, which is a nuisance in the archives.
