Indiana District Regatta

June 23rd & 24th 2012

The 2012 district regatta was held on Geist Lake in Indianapolis, where seven local boats competed for the 2012 championship.

We start racing in mid-April each year and usually have nice winds until sometime in July when very hot air temperatures seem to eat up any breezes that arrive. However, this year we have had had hot air temperatures but accompanied by moderate to strong winds.

But not this year! On Saturday afternoon, Paul White, the Race Commission Chairman, held the fleet for an extra hour before squeaking in only one triangle - windward-leeward race in air that barely met the minimum 5 mph.

On Saturday evening, the sailors and guests shared a pork dinner and then mingled with folks attending a prospective new member musical evening.

On Sunday morning, the harbor signal sounded at 10 a.m. and with a bit more breeze we squeezed in two more races. The first was a triangle plus windward – leeward course followed by a windward – leeward.

Mike Franceschini with crew Stewart Fossceco and Ann Matteucci won the regatta with a 2nd and 2 first finishes. The complete results are above.

Peter McGinity, the District Commodore, made an impassioned plea for all seven skippers to check the ILCA website and seriously consider traveling to Houston for the North Americans in mid-August.
