The Bayview One Design had two full days of racing with 8 races, mostly 2-leg W/L ending both days with a 4-leg W/L.

We saw light breeze (ENE 3-5 kts) on Saturday with a heavy power boat chop which proved to be challenging for the fleet. Patience was the buzz word of the day! Current also came into play; distorting start lines, lay-lines and mark roundings, not always to our advantage.  Connecting the shifts and keeping momentum during the lulls in pressure seemed to pay for the leaders. Mark Allen, Matt Morin and I battled out the day, rounding out in a three-way tie for 1st with 10 points.

Per usual the Bayview party did not disappoint, with cheap Mt. Gay drinks and great entertainment!

Day two brought overcast and drizzly conditions with flat water and light breeze (WSW 5-12 kts), building to full hiking conditions for the last race of the series. Again, current gave the fleet a challenge with general recalls, resulting in I-flag starts for a majority of the day. Upwind was challenging with the 10 degree swings + zephyrs of breeze that would pass through the course. Mid, John McCree was spot on connecting the shifts and forward crew, Grace Grabowski executed all of the maneuvers flawlessly! Conservative tactics, staying between the fleet and the next mark paid downwind.

Knowing where we stood going into day two, the team’s goal was consistency. With a finish of 5,3,2,5 we were able to squeak out the 1st overall, followed by team Morin who won several races, occasionally by large margin.   Second runner-up awarded to Mark Allen, followed by locals Trey Rose and Tom Vickers.  The other skipper of note was Liz Obermaier, a senior from Detroit Country Day High School sailing team, sailing with teammate Luuk Schmit and coach Brian Williams, and nearly winning race 5—in her first Lighting regatta.

Thank you to Kevin Thomas and Bayview Yacht Club as race chair as well as Crescent Yacht Club for hosting the Lightning fleet!
