We decided to try something different this year and schedule the Districts in February, hoping for more wind than we’ve had in recent mid-summer versions of this event. We had planned to sail one day in the ocean and one day in the Bay, but a storm brought with it a big swell which prevented exiting the harbor. So we sailed both days in the Bay.
Saturday had good breeze with gusts up to about 15 knots and a fair amount of rain. Jeff Coppens and crew of Tom Goddard and Maddy Browsea sailed masterfully. They sailed the shifty southerly breezes perfectly, always seeming to hook into shifts and pressure with great speed and point. That proved to be a powerful combination and team Coppens ended the day with three bullets out of three races. The team of Bob Martin, Julie Martin and Brian Genovese ended the day with 9 points with the team of Larry Schmitz, Mark Baker and Hil Penix only one point behind.
Sunday was warmer, without rain and with winds in the 8 to 10 knot range from the normal westerly direction. It was great racing with boats overlapped at every mark rounding. As a consequence, results were greatly mixed with a shuffling of overall positions. By the end of the day, it was team Martin in first, Coppens in second and Schmitz in third.
Special thanks to Jeff Coppens, Joel Humphrey and Bill Cabrall for making the effort to travel to this regatta. More boats on the line make it more fun for everyone.
