The 2003 Lightning Southern District Regatta was a huge success with
sailors from 4 states participating.
Saturday morning had insufficient breeze to start a race, so the committee
wisely towed everyone in for lunch and hydration. After lunch, the breeze
filled in and we completed three excellent races in light shifting winds.
The committee work at starting and moving upwind marks was outstanding.
The JYC "Cinco de Mayo" dinner on Saturday night was really great, with
good food, refreshments, and live music on the veranda.
Sunday brought forth good winds which challenged the boat handling skills
of each crew with "lots of hiking" on the upwind legs and the ultimate
dingy experience of planing and spinnaker jibes on the downwind legs.
When the fifth race was completed, everyone was ready to come in and take
a break. After all the points were tabulated, to no one's surprise, Dr.
Larry Frost III took home the regatta in convincing style with 4 first
place finishes, thereby adding his name again to the giant perpetual
trophy.
The Southern Lightning District would like to express our thanks to our
hosts, the Jackson Yacht Club, for their support and hospitality. To JYC
Race Chairman Edgar Buchanan, for organizing the committee team, and to Bo
Palmer and all the members of the J-22 fleet who provided outstanding
committee work including utilization of their own power boats, and to
Lightning Skipper Chris Frost (13170) who assisted on the committee when
his sailings plans were changed by outside forces.
