SUGAR BOWL REGATTA

New Orleans, LA, December 19-20

The 1998 Nokia Sugar Bowl was sailed December 19 & 20th at New Orleans Yacht Club. The Sugar Bowl committee has been struggling to increase participation. With Christmas landing on or close to the weekend it makes it hard to travel. Hopefully the next few years will allow for a better date. This year had seven boats sail in the Lightning class. The farthest was Mark Allen driving in from Michigan. Bill Killebrew came in from Nashville and won race three very convincingly. Steve Harris with his wife and father crewing made their annual trip from Houston. Steve has won this regatta before but this year came in a close third. John Bohnenkamp from Birmingham, AL sailed very well even after praying to the porcelain god on Saturday night, finishing in second. In first was John Marion from Mandeville, LA. Excellent crew work and good starts allowed John to sail very consistently with three firsts and two seconds. Unlike previous years the weather was perfect both days. Nothing like sailing Lightnings in warm weather in December.

New Orleans is a fun town. Make plans to attend the Sugar Bowl in 1999.
