The Hampton Yacht Club is excited to host the Atlantic Coast Championships. For those unfamiliar with the location, HYC is situated on the Hampton flats were the historic James River flows into the Chesapeake Bay. Founded in 1903, Hampton Yacht Club has a tradition of hosting national and international events and home to several one design fleets (Hampton One Design, Lightning, 505, Viper and J-24 to name a few). Following the Lightning ACC’s Hampton will host the 2023 Optimist One Design National Championships.
The sailing venue is a located approximately 1 mile from the club on the historic Hampton Roads Flatts- known for the historic civil battle between the Monitor and Merrimac. The venue offers scenic views of the world’s largest Naval installation in Norfolk where you may see various Naval ships transiting and at the piers. The sailing venue is ideally situated for good racing conditions.
The area is also family friendly- located in the historic triangle you can walk the battlefields of Yorktown, visit the first settlement in the Colonies at Jamestown, see re-enactments of the revolutionary war at historic Williamsburg as well as visit Busch Gardens and Water Country.
For the sailors on Friday afternoon there will be a Lightning labs with Greg Fisher providing one on one tuning with your boat (sign up list to be posted on the web site) and Gary Bodie (Former ODU, Naval Academy and US Sailing Olympic team coach) leading a discussion on local sailing conditions. The event provides something for everyone.
We look forward to having the Lightning Class come to HYC, and I know you will find the members here gracious and welcoming to everyone. For more details on the club go to www.hamptonyc.com and continue to check the regatta registration page at Lightning Atlantic Coast Championship (theclubspot.com) as details are being updated continuously and please register early so we can plan for a great event!
I look forward to seeing everyone there.
