From the ILCA President

It's a New Year

It’s a new year and the ILCA is rolling out a new website.  We are still working out a few kinks just as many of us will soon be working out a few kinks in our sailing at the Midwinter Championship at St. Pete.  I look forward to seeing you in the boat park (no postponements please), on the water and in the SPYC bar.  This blog is a feature of the new website and I hope to use it to more directly engage and communicate with members about what is happening in the Class.  A classic Lightning blog is already in the works and if you are passionate about some aspect of sailing our beloved square boats we may be able to give you your own blog!

At this time of year my thoughts tend to drift to my other favorite water sport:  skiing.   Lightnings are never far from my mind and I do have a meeting scheduled with Steve Constants on the Wildcat chairlift at Alta in two weeks.  We are certain to figure our how to grow the class and find the perfect format for the North Americans.  If you are looking for some soft water fun the Florida Winter Series is in full swing and the Southern Circuit is happening the last week of March.  It’s never to early too start thinking about the summer of 2018 which is going to packed with the most big Lightning events in recent memory.  Think about attending the 80th Anniversary Regatta in Skaneateles, Youth Worlds in Athens, Greece, the Pan Am test event in Peru, North Americans in San Diego, Women Juniors and Masters in Michigan or come visit me at the fabulous Brotz Regatta in Sheboygan.  Wherever you live there is probably a regatta near you.

The strength of the ILCA comes from its membership.  Think about what you can do to help the class this year.  Take a new person sailing, let a junior borrow your boat, organize a regatta, make sure your fleet members join the class, help with race committee and most importantly:  go sailing more often!

Fair Winds, Todd Wake
