We are inviting the Lightning Fleet to again race with us at this year’s 10th annual Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge & Dinghy Distance Race. The Sunfish Challenge is a grass roots long distance dinghy sailing event, designed to get families on the water, in a fun and affordable way.
This event, hosted by the Hampton Yacht Club, is a long distance dinghy race, with a few changes from years past. We will start at the Hampton Yacht Club, with the boats sailing past the World’s Largest Naval Base, rounding the Middle Ground Lighthouse before finishing just off of the Hampton Yacht Club docks, a total distance of about 12 miles.
We anticipate having over 80 race participants for this exciting dinghy race. Last year over 70 sailors raced in fluky winds for the sprint down the river and they came away with very tall tales to tell.
Spinsheet Magazine, the leading sailing magazine of the Chesapeake Bay, has again signed on as a major sponsor as well. As such, they have been touting the Sunfish Challenge in their magazine, and will provide a photo-boat and reporters to cover the event. As an added bonus, we have a press release that went out from the Hampton Convention and Visitors Bureau about our regatta. The HCVB are helping us to spread the word about the regatta, and we are working on getting a spot on the Hampton Road Show in further helping to get the word out.
Please take a look at our website, www.hrsunfishrace.com for more information on this exciting race.
We'd love to have racers from the Lightning Fleet on the start line, and if we can get 3 boats registered, we can have a separate start, and awards at the post race party.
Hope to see you on the start line!
