August Meeting Updates
 
Governing Board Meeting - August 1, 2020
A meeting of the Governing Board was held virtually on Saturday, August 1, 2020. Watch the Meeting Recording. 
Key item:
  • A temporary amendment was passed to raise the age limit of participants by 1 year for the re-scheduled Youth Worlds (July 2021). Specifically - For the 2021 Youth Worlds Skippers and crew must be no older than 21; to clarify Skippers and crew may not turn twenty-one (22) years old during the year of the Championship. This  change is in effect for 2021 only. 
 
Annual Meeting Meeting - August 8, 2020
The Annual Meeting of Members was held virtually on Saturday, August 8, 2020. Watch the Meeting Recording . 
Key Items:
  • Todd Wake was recognized with a Life Membership for his service to the Class. 
  • Bids for 2022 Women's, Junior and Master North American Championships are being accepted. 
  • Slate of Officers 2020-2021 was approved as submitted. 
2020 South American Championship - UPDATE
At this time the December event is postponed. Watch for another update in November for a possible announcement of a rescheduled event in February 2021 (at the same venue COL). If the event is not held by February 2021 the 2020 event will be canceled. 

If the 2020 event is canceled, the 2021 South American Championship will take place in Tomine, COL in the 4th Quarter of 2021.

Member Spotlight: ON THE FRITZ - Fritz Dusel
 
An avid cruising sailor on the mighty Niagara River and 1980 North American Champion Crew for Mark Bryant. Fritz had been trying to revive sailing and racing on the river over the past few years.  With the closure of the USA/CAN border, many of the Lightning sailors at the Buffalo Canoe Club (Fleet 12), which is located on Lake Erie 15 miles west of Buffalo, NY in Crystal Beach, Ontario, needed to find a place to sail Lightnings for the summer. Enter Fritz Dusel...
In the NEWS: 
The Lightning Class was featured in the recent One Design Line Newsletter produced by US Sailing. The Class highlighted benefits the Class has seen as a result of the Boat Grant Program. Here are a few that were featured: 
  • This has increased class visibility with not only younger sailors but other classes and the sailing community as a whole.
  • A youthful enthusiasm has spread throughout the class. At the 2019 North American Championship, 25% of the fleet was comprised of teams under 30.
  • We are seeing new, younger boat owners. To date, 30% of Boat Grant helmsmen have gone on to become Lightning boat owners. This has encouraged other younger sailors to purchase boats as well.
  • Over the past four years we have seen a spike in female interest for the program. In both 2017 and 2019, both teams were headed up by female skippers. Of the 128 participants, 34% were female. In total, we have had 10 female skippers and six all-female teams.

The Twenty-fifth Bare Bones Regatta
Come join us on Saturday, September 26th for a one-day regatta at Mansfield Sailing Club. This year the Bare Bones Regatta will be a one-day event. Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers. Regatta fees are $25.00 per boat. The first race is at noon and no race after 4:00. There will be hors d'oeuvres but no dinner.

Fontelieu One Design Regatta (ODR) and CT/RI District Championships
Open to all Lightnings, join us for one of the most popular regattas on Long Island Sound. Due to COVID, we've shortened it to one day so that people can return home afterwards. This regatta will also serve as the CT/RI District Championships (originally scheduled for June).
