Eight Bells... David Nickels
The Lightning Class lost a true friend and pillar of the Class. On June 7, 2023, Dave passed in his sleep at approximately 8:17 AM. His brother Louis was with him at the time. Based on the wishes of David, a traditional funeral is not planned at this time. A memorial will be planned at a later date. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Nickels Family.

From the Nickels Family: Thank you to all for your prayers and support. It was a difficult few weeks for the family but fortunately, it lasted only a few weeks given the circumstances. Please continue to keep the entire Nickels family in your thoughts and prayers as they transition to the grieving process. An obituary will be shared upon potential publication.

Back on May 20, 2022 Bob Astrove and Mike Seibert talked with Dave about his teenage days at Nickels & Holman and how he began Nickels Boat Works. They also talked about boat building in the 50's and 60's, wooden boat construction and technology changes that changed the way things were done. We remember Dave in is element, talking about building boats: Classic Boats an interview with Dave Nickels

It is almost high sailing season in North America for the majority of members. With that there are many regattas coming up!

This weekend, June 17-18 there are 6 regional regattas happening including the CT/RI Districts at Cedar Point, the Evans Regatta in the MW District and the SELD have the James Island Regatta. A special shout out to all of the Dad's out there. Father's Day is on Sunday, we hope to see many of you out on the race course! Happy Father's Day!

Next weekend June 24-25 there are at least 8 regional regattas happening including the Pacific NW members are getting ready for the Canadian Open with the Pacific Coast Championship, the Central NY District is holding their District Championship and the Class Boat Get Together in Keuka and down in Ecuador members are racing in Manta to see who will represent ECU at the PANAM Games and that is just a few highlights.

We are seeing a trend of late registrants and we need your help to reverse that.

Why Register For A Regatta Early And Often?

There are so many reasons to sign up for a regatta online as soon as you know you are attending.  You may not have all the logistics worked out quite yet (crew, housing, etc.), but you know you are most likely going.

What are some of the reasons you ask?

  • It REALLY helps the organizers plan accordingly so your regatta experience is amazing
  • Snowball effect (the more that are registered, the more that will register)
  • Avoid any late entry fees
  • Don’t need to pay immediately, just register & get your name in lights
  • Early housing options & availability

Please sign up today for one of the following regattas:
