.....Warm thoughts of the Southern Circuit or a Tuesday evening beer can race are probably the best way to get through the cold.
 
 This year Nick Turney will again be leading the mentor program during the Southern Circuit.  Not to worry if you have never sailed in Miami or St Pete, Nick and the rest of the sailors will point you in the right direction.  I guarantee you will have a good time. Go to the ILCA website and register now.
 

The World Championships are being held in Espoo, Finland in June. The organizers are hard at work preparing for a great event and I am excited to visit Finland for the first time.  Discovering new people and places is one of the best parts of the Lightning Class... 2020 Youth Worlds to be held in Sheboygan, Wisconsin USA
The 2020 Lightning Youth World Championship will be held at Sail Sheboygan with assistance from Fleet 187, The Midwest District and Sheboygan Yacht Club Friday, June 27 - Wednesday, July 1, 2020. The Organizing Team is looking forward to hosting 20 (possibly more) Teams.  More Information Tentative schedule, more information and Canada and US Qualifying information.

February 15-17, 2019 - Final tune-up before the Southern Circuit is at the St Petersburg NOOD Regatta - 3 days of racing! St Pete NOOD Information  Options to keep your boat in St Pete prior to the Southern Circuit in March.  19 boats are registered- can we make it 20??

The Mentor Program is Back! 
Nick Turney is coming back to lead the Mentor Program! This program offers a week long learning opportunity on and off the water. Program participants are teamed up with a mentor to help you during the week. In addition, Nick leads morning briefings, personal one-on-one debriefs and is out on the water during racing to help participants on a special program only VHF Channel. Teams must REGISTER for the program. For more information or to REGISTER check out the event calendar listing in the ILCA Event Calendar.
 
Karl Smither Award Nominations
Nominations are now being accepted for the Karl Smither Award. The Smither Award is presented by the St Petersburg Yacht Club. This trophy recognized the contributions of a Corinthian Sailor, Class Mentor and Lightning enthusiast. Please submit your nomination to the  ILCA Class Office.

Congratulations to many of our Lightning sailors recognized by US Sailing! 

Pontiac Yacht Club received the National One-Design Regatta Award for excellence in development, promotion and management of the year’s most outstanding one-design regatta - the 2018 Lightning Women’s, Junior and Master North American Championship! 

Kevin Morin, Jim Thompson and Doug Wake received the National One-Design Creativity Award for the development of MarkSetBot. 

Cedar Point Yacht Club (home to Fleet 126) received the National One-Design Club Award recognizing administrative excellence, fleet growth, creative programming, regatta support and member contributions.

 Watch the Class Website and Facebook pages for updates from the St Pete NOOD Feb 15-17. The Lightning is one of the larger fleets represented with nearly 20 boats. 
 
Please be sure to submit your results with CREW NAMES to the Class Office. If you have a short summary and a few photos even better! If your regatta isn't listed here - be sure to add the event to the ILCA Event Calendar and send in results after the regatta!
